Money and budget : preparing for your trip

The official currency is the Ariary (MGA).

As an indication, €1 corresponds to approximately 5,000 Ariary, depending on the current exchange rate. Check the rate at the time of exchange as it may vary slightly.

Before leaving

It is recommended to budget entirely in Ariary before leaving. It is more convenient. In general, you should combine: Credit/Debit Card + Cash + other payment methods if available.

Can I pay by card?

Yes, but with moderation. International cards are accepted in most parts of the country, but often come with high fees. In major cities, using a card is a good option, but it is not accepted everywhere.

Where and how to withdraw money?

ATMs and banks are widely available for withdrawing money. However, be cautious: do not rely on a single withdrawal before leaving a major city, and plan ahead. On the road, your travel advisor or guide will always be available to guide or assist you.
